Hi there! Is this the area to subscribe to your newsletter???
I’ve become Australian permanent resident few months ago (I moved from Italy 4 years ago) and came here to change career.
I used to be graphic & web designer and now I’m working as nursery person and landscaper and following a landscape design course at Burnley (I live in Melbourne).
I’m very interested in sustainable practices and therefore very attracted by rooftop gardens.
Are there any courses on the topic???
Cheers,
Antonino

The Action Plan for Brisbane looks for very very interesting
Thanks and good luck#

I am extremely excited about sustainable green roof top gardens.
Having almost completed a Diploma in Horticulture, i also have my own design business and work for a Landscape Company.
I live in Melbourne and was wondering if there is any courses available here or overseas. I would be willing to go interstate or overseas to pursue education in such an exciting and growing development.
Thankyou
Cheers to a greener future!

Lara,
The best that can be offered at the moment is a course currently being written for a two-day “introductory course” in green roofs to be held by Green Roofs Australia on February 25 and 26, 2008 in Brisbane. It will precede the second “Green Roofs for Australia” conference at the Brisbane Technology park on February 28 and 29. The course and the conference will bring you up to speed on green roofs in Australia.
We hope the introductory course will be the trigger to TAFE and other interest in green roof training all round Australia – with diploma and degree studies being the ultimate objective.
Keep reading our website postings. I expect to file a story withing a month on the green roof education courses we expect to be offering. They will come at a cost of course, which will be given.
Regards,
Geoff.

Hi,
I’m working in a 50 persons company, if I or my boss register as a company, is everybody from the company included or do we have to all register as individuals?
Thanks
Isabelle

This is a very rapid response: As an environmentalist I find this whole concept wonderful. As a horticulturalist I am wondering what factors constrain the on-going or sustainable production of food and amenity plants. What are the implications of the climatic zone – temperate (southern Oz), sub-tropical and tropical (Qld, WA, NT and the north from there…the Gulf)?
As a supplier, I am focused on the formulation of the growth media. I have a clear concept of a product that is light, holds water and nutrients and releases them as needed. Any interest?

Dear GRA,
I’d love to try setting up a greenroof at my ordinary house in the Melbourne suburbs. Do you have any contacts for who could assist? Most of the links look like they’re for businesses or large scale projects. Is there a course for home owners who want to try this?
Kind regards,
Deborah

Hi Deborah,
Thanks for your enquiry. At this stage in the development of green roofs in Melbourne, green roof construction on suburban houses is generally prohibitively expensive due to the costs associated with increasing the structural capacity of the roof to deal with the additional weight.
Most domestic roofs in Victoria are engineered to hold 25 kg/m2 whereas the minimum weight of a green roof profile is around 100 kg/m2. Before adding any extra weight to a roof its therefore imperative to consult a qualified structural engineer. If your budget allows for including the added structural support you probably require, there are some commercially available green roof suppliers.
Other considerations include access to and safety on the rooftop, waterproofing, drainage and the type of growing medium and plants to be used. You may also require town planning permission and/or building certification.
If your budget is limited, its best to try growing plants in containers that are supported by non-rooftop structures and training the plants onto trellises, wires or some other structure to allow them to grow up and over the roof. Safety, access, maintenance, council permits and the types of plants you will grow are still important considerations.
All the best,
Ben Nicholson
